These pictures are of John's Sabal sp. 'Birmingham' . John bought this plant mail-order around 12 years ago as a small 1 gallon size plant. It has not just survived but thrived growing into a full size trunking palm today. This plant survived one of  Tulsa's all time record lows dropping to -11*f  on 2-4-1996 with only 20% leaf tip burn. Sabal sp. 'Birmingham' is probably the worlds hardiest trunking palm but little is known about it's origin. It is only known in cultivation originating from one now deceased unknown species of sabal that grew in zone 7b Birmingham Alabama for many years. Much speculation abounds with this palm. Is it a hybrid of Sabal palmetto and Sabal minor or collected from a now extinct population of unknown sabal palm. Please click on image for a full size picture.
