Native Warren Arkansas
Sabal minor

This page is devoted to my encounter with native Arkansas Sabal minor populations. This population was along the Saline river and its flood plains. My first sighting of palms was on Highway 167 south of Little Rock where it crosses the Saline river. The plants were scattered along the river, but due to flooding I was unable to photograph or collect any. I  continued traveling south on 167 to Fordyce and saw no more palms. From Fordyce I went southeast on Highway 8 to Warren, then  east on Highway 4 to the Saline river area and found huge fields of minors. From there I back-tracked up roads that crossed the Saline and found that Sabal minor only grows along the river's banks and flood plains.

This is the location where I photographed  Sabal minor.

I have never seen such a dense forest of Sabal minor anywhere else in my travels. This grove is at least 20 acres in size.

In the northern part of its range, Sabal minor occurs mainly in deciduous hardwood forest.

The leaves are very deeply cut, and not costapalmate.
